Pool Safety Tips to Know

Pool Safety Tips that All Pool Owners in Texas Should Know

When you’re the owner of a pool, there’s no greater feeling — especially during the warmer months out of the year in Texas. However, with a big aquatic feature comes big responsibilities. To keep you and your loved ones safe from pool-related accidents, here are some pool safety tips to keep in mind.

Always Supervise Children When They Use the Pool

It’s vital to always supervise your children when they go for a swim. According to the CDC, about one in five people who pass from drowning are children 14 and younger. Keeping this in mind, it’s crucial to ensure that at least one adult, aged 18 and above, is present when anyone aged under 18 goes for a swim.

While supervising minors, make sure that the swimmers present do not:

  • Run around the pool.

  • Swim too closely to the drain.

  • Exit the pool if a storm is in the area.

  • Do not dive in the shallow areas of the pool and more.

Install Pool Barriers and/or Alarms

To prevent any swimming pool-related incidents from occurring, chapter 757 of the Texas Health and Safety Code requires that if a pool is present on your property, you must have a pool barrier installed, as well as door and window locks and alarms that lead to your pool.

More specifically, you must:

  • Refrain from having a chain link fence installed around your pool (since it’s climbable).

  • Gaps under the fence/barrier can be no more than 4”.

  • The fence/barrier around the pool must be a minimum of 48” tall.
